Circle of fortune: The long-term impact of Western customs institution in China

Next in Economics

A recent study examines the long-term impact of the Chinese Maritime Customs (CMC) on customs institutions in China. By comparing areas where the CMC took over customs stations with nearby unaffected areas, the study finds that counties historically affected by the CMC have higher development levels today. These areas also experience less corruption in business and bureaucracy. The findings suggest that the CMC institution had a lasting effect on cultural norms and institutions in local society.
