Julian Swann discusses the ‘politics of disgrace’ in Ancien Régime France, which led elite subjects to submit to imprisonment or internal exile on the whim of the monarch. Julian Swann FRHS is a British historian and academic and Pro-Vice Master for Research and professor of Early Modern History and has taught at Birkbeck since 1989.
