Governing bodies, headteacher performance and pay: the role of external advisers

The performance management scheme that has been operating in English schools since 2000 gives considerable responsibilities to the school’s governing body. These include responsibility for the appraisal of the headteacher’s overall performance. Professor Peter Earley holds the Chair of Education Leadership and Management at the London Centre for Leadership in Learning, Department of Learning and Leadership, UCL Institute of Education,University College London.
