Exposure to collective gender-based violence causes intimate partner violence

One in three women globally experience intimate partner violence (IPV) over their lifetimes, highlighting the pervasive nature of this issue.
Exposure to sexual violence by armed groups against women can increase the likelihood of male veterans committing physical violence against a female intimate partner.
Standard explanations of IPV based on group norms and intra-household bargaining may not fully capture the factors that cause men to engage in violent behavior, suggesting the importance of alternative approaches in preventing IPV, particularly after episodes of collective violence.
