Online homophobia from the perspectives of LGBTQ+ social media users

The Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act (SSMPA) is a Nigerian law enacted in 2013 that prohibits same-sex relationships and marriages. It has led to an increase in online homophobia against the LGBTQ+ community on social media in Nigeria. A study conducted with LGBTQ+ individuals and members of a nonprofit organization reveals that online homophobia has intensified for sexual minorities in Nigeria after the implementation of the SSMPA legislation. The findings suggest a strong correlation between the enactment of the SSMPA and the rise of online homophobia in Nigeria.
