Women’s Political Representation in African Rebel Parties

Women’s political representation is higher in post-conflict states compared to non-conflict-afflicted states in Africa, with factors such as changing gender norms, international pressure, and local women’s movements contributing to these gains.
This research analyzes political representation in rebel groups that became political parties to see how conflict legacies affect women’s representation.
No matter the context or war outcome, rebel parties nominate and elect more women than other political parties.
